Although crawlspaces don’t typically get thought of often, a crawlspace can have an impact on the overall condition of your property and the health of those living within it. A crawlspace that is wet and damp, dark, dirty and dingy, with an exposed dirt floor and limited insulation is common – however that does not mean it is OK. Another serious symptom of an unhealthy crawlspace is the presence of mold, fungus, and bacteria.
There are two primary contributors to the moisture that is present in a crawlspace, and creating the symptoms: 1) exposed ground; 2) outside air. The exposed ground – dirt – is itself part of the issue. The exposed ground will allow for water to pass from inside and outside of the crawlspace, and creates a holding tank of sorts for the water to stay within. Outside air carries a level of moisture within it: relative humidity. With the air flow in, and out, of your crawlspace, the relative humidity of the crawlspace will fluctuate creating an environment for mold, mildew, fungus, and bacteria; as well as dry rot and insects.
